I used Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) devices in my computer because they are significantly less expensive than the speedier Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) devices.

I use the Ultra66 ATA/66 IDE controller card by Promise Technology, which allows me to attach four additional IDE devices to my data bus. I picked up this card for $55 at Azzo Computers.

The hard drive is an IBM Deskstar 22GPX DJNA-371800 18GB ATA/66, that I obtained in September 1999 from Allstar Microelectronics for $203.

The DVD drive is the fourth generation Toshiba SD-M1212, that I obtained in September 1999 from Allstar Microelectronics for $80.

I use a refurbished Iomega ZIP 100MB removable storage drive that I purchased in September 1999 from Access Micro for $55.

I picked up a Syquest SparQ 1GB drive plus a 1GB disk for $35 from Ebay sometime last fall. It works fine and serves as useful backup storage.

I obtained all of these drives as Original Equipment Manufacturer (Oem) parts, which means they came "bare" or with no software or retail packaging.
