It is critical to keep your CPU cool by affixing to it a heatsink and fan assembly. I obtained the GlobalWin FKK32 heatsink/fan assembly on 21 Dec 1999 and discovered that it was too big for the K7M mainboard. When fitted to the Athlon casing, the GlobalWin FKK32 occluded the ATX power connector on the mainboard. Drat. I had to find another cooler for my Athlon. I did some searching and found the K7HO K7/P2 cooler, developed by 3dfxCool and advertised as "a powerful cooler that fits all K7 motherboards". Here are a couple of shots of the K7HO K7/P2 cooler, which materialized in my mailbox on January 5, 2000. Notice how I gooped the back of the heatsink with silicon heatsink compound. I spread just a thin layer evenly over the heatsink's back, which will rest against the back of the Athlon CPU. For your edification, here are two more shots of the gooped heatsink. I carefully fit the heatsink/fan assembly onto the back of the Athlon CPU, then tightened the two retaining screws underneath the heatsink, not too tightly, just snug. Notice how I am wearing a grounding strap on my wrist, the other end of which is clipped to the side of the power supply in the SuperMicro case. Here is the CPU with heatsink/fan assembly installed in the SuperMicro case. |
